The 18th Century Register of Emigrants from Southwest Germany to America and Other Countries show 4 Strübel children coming into the United States in 1752. The children are Anna (b.1735), Appollonia (b.1731), Catharina (b.1727) and Ulrich (b.1728). They arrived with their father, Jacob (b 1704). Also arriving at the same time is: Melchior (b.1706), Johann (b. 1725), and Johann (b. 1732). The Johann born in 1732 is the Johannes that the Strever line comes from and his name gets changed to Johannas.  Melchior was a 2nd cousin to both Ulrich and Johann and at some point, he returned to Germany as this is where he died. It is unclear who the other Johann is.

I have worked with a professional genealogist, Warren Bittner, out of Salt Lake City, to trace Ulrich's roots back in Germany. The farthest back I have gone is to Michel Stribel, born before 1611. These details show that Ulrich (b.1728) and Johannes (b.1732) were not brothers, but they were third cousins.

The remainder of this writing will be focused on Ulrich, with some information provided about Johannas . There are maps of the area showing they had adjoining farms near the Ancram lead mines, around the 1780's, which in those days was very common for families. The maps show the name spelled as Streval but it was not uncommon for there to be misspellings. The farms on these maps were definitely their farms because the locations tie to all the other historical information. In addition to the adjoining farms, they were sponsors for each other's children.

Johannas` and Ulrich's names are spelled several ways and from here on out, in this writing, they will be spelled as "Johannas" and "Ulrich" unless another source such as a census, map or book is being quoted. It is important to note that names were often spelled incorrectly and it has carried down. The original spelling of Ulrich's name, according to the church records, is Ulrich Strübel.

The original family name was Strübel, sometimes spelled Stribel as well as Striebel. The u with the dots, a standalone " i" and "ie"  were often interchanged. Once the family arrived in the United States it became Strevel.  This would explain why the census takers and emigration people would have written Strubel in some of the records. In any event, Johannas` line changed it to Strever after Johannas and his wife died. Both of their gravestones have Strevel on them, which would confirm this. Ulrich's line kept the Strevel name until the early 1800`s. By this time this family line had moved up to the Berne area of New York. It appears that George Strevel and possibly Johannis Strevel left the Berne area and went to Canada. Everyone who stayed in Berne changed his or her name to Strevell. George (and possibly Johannis) left the named unchanged. Eventually, some of the Canadian Strevels, came back to the United States and settled in Michigan. There are now Strevels, Strevells and Strevers all around the United States as well as Strevels in Canada. And in Germany, there are both Strübel's and Striebel's that are related.

Ulrich Strevel

Ulrich is the father of all the Strevels and Strevells in the US and Canada today. The records of his ancestors is quite clear and present day Strevels and Strevells should be able to find out how they tie into this family tree.

Ulrich arrived in the colonies in 1752, at the age of 24, with his father Jacob. He married Margaretha Coon in 1758 and had his first child in 1760.

He settled on a farm in the Ancramdale area, in Dutchess County, adjoining the farm Johannas settled on.The area was later changed to Columbia County. The farm is still there and is on Crest Lane. It is called Crest Lane Farms and below is a picture of what the house looks like today. The part of the house on the far right side is the original portion of the home

Ulrich had 6 children:

    Maria (b. Nov 24,1760)

    Jacob (b. Mar 5, 1762)

    Matheus Frederick (b. Jan 14,1764)

    Elizabeth (b. Mar 26, 1766)

    Georg (b. Feb 4, 1768)

    Eva (b. about 1770)

Some of Ulrich's descendants fled to Canada rather than be forced to fight for England during the Revolutionary War. Ulrich was said to be imprisoned until he swore allegiance to Britain. His descendants later returned to the US- some to New York and others to Michigan.

Ulrich, as well as Johannas, is listed in the 10th regiment Albany Co. Militia, Revolutionary War. In that Reg. they volunteered to serve, but may NOT have been called - besides, many N.Y. Revolutionary War records were burnt in Albany court house fire.

Tories from Livingston Manor were jailed at Kingston and questioned. "Ildrick Streble, prisoner, saith that Armount Viele has in April last swarn him to secrecy and alligence to King Geo. at the house of Hendrick Hoysradt -etc" also charged were Johannes Dings, and Daniel McIntryre. All neighbors, and relatives. This from "Nine Little Partners". Ulrich was imprisoned as a Tory for a short while during the Revolutionary War. There is a record of the amount of peas (?) and bread that he consumed while incarcerate

Other accounts say that he was imprisoned until he would swear allegiance to Britain, which makes more sense as he was from Germany and had no ties to Britain.

Ulrich & Magaretha disappear from the Ancram and N.Y. area about 1790.  There was an "Uldrich Striebel farm" in the Ancram area in 1980 that was owned by the McArthur's. Both Ulrich and Johannes were in the 1790 N.Y. census, but Ulrich disappeared by 1800 census although he may have been in one of his childrens' households by that time as he would have been about 70 years old.

Two of Ulrich's children, Jacob and Eva married a Hoysradt.

We do not have exact records for Ulrich's siblings, Appolonia and Catharina, but do know Ulrich and his wife Margaretha were sponsors for children of both of them. We do not have the name of Appolonia's child but we do have the names of Catharina's children. Her first child, Johannes, born in 1761 was sponsored by Uldrich and Margaretha. Her second child, Niclas, born in 1764,  was sponsored by Johannes and Maria Strevel.

Jacob Strubel

Jacob left Seissen for the colonies in 1752. It is unclear what happened to Jacob's wife as we do not have a record of her death, and she didn't make it to the colonies. She may have died on the way to the colonies.

Jacob had 6 children, but it appears that at least one of them died young as her name was Anna Maria, and the next daughter he has, 2 years later, is named Anna as well. He also had a daughter, Maria, born in 1740, who did not make it to the colonies either. It is possible she died in infancy as well.

The 4 remaining children came to the colonies, with him, in 1752. They are:

Catharina (b. 1727)

Ulrich (b. 1728)

Appolonia (b. 1731)

Anna (b.1735)

Matheus Strevel

Matheus married Susanna Wright (born 1785) in 1798 and had 9 children:

Harvey (b. 1801), in Berne, NY

    Isaac (b. Apr 13, 1802)

    Johannis (b. Mar 25, 1804)

Estes H. Strevell

Estes married Mary Ann Taylor (b.1828) on Sep 16, 1848 and they had one son:

Derwin, (b.1849)

The 1850 Census shows Estes farming in Berne and living with his wife, Mary and son Derwin. His brothers Amidon and Jason lived with him as well since their father, Harvey, had died in 1844. Jason was a student at the time and Amidon helped on the farm. In addition, they had one other laborer living with them - William, who was 15 years old.

His farm, in 1850, was valued at $2500.

Amidon M. Strevell

Amidon M. was born in the town of Berne in 1830. He is the son of Harvey, and the grandson of Mathias Strevell, who came from Dutchess County to Berne about 1800.

Amidon married Sarah Bradley (b.1832)  and they had one daughter:

Olive B. (b. Jul 8, 1855)

In 1857 Amidon went to Albany where he was in a store.

Sarah died in 1867, when Olive was only 12 years old. Amidon married again, sometime before 1869. His second wife was Mariah Cessagrant. Mariah was a French Canadian and her father was a fur trapper. Together, they had four children:

Jessie

Cora Bell (Mar 18, 1869), who died at 6 months of age.

Lotta (b. 1872)

Amidon Moore (b. 1873)

In 1873, Amidon returned to Berne and engaged in the farming business until 1885 when he moved to New Scotland, and in 1889 came to Ravena, NY (south of Albany) and opened a hardware store called Strevell & DeFriest Hardware Stoves Co,  which he carried on for quite some time, and eventually handed down to his son  Amidon Moore Strevell. The store also carried stoves and Amidon worked on heating and plumbing. Since, at the time, the store was out in the country, he went all over the area  to sell things. Jean Brocklebank Jennings, Amidon's great-granddaughter, had pictures of the inside of the store where you can see the stoves. Eileen Strevell-Boehne has a picture of Amidon’s daughter Lotta standing in front of the store.

He always took a keen interest in the affairs of his town, and for nine years served as highway commissioner, and was also a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1874.

Amidon is referred to in  Harry Strevell's pictures as "Big Grandpa" Strevell.

Mariah remembered when Lincoln died. His casket was put onto a hearse train and the train traveled across the country. When the train came through Albany, Mariah saw the casket in the train. Mariah died in 1929 and is buried in the Albany Rural County Cemetery.

On May 7, 1897, Amidon died at the age of 66, of Diabetes. He is buried in the Albany Rural County Cemetery along with both his wives, his daughter Cora Bell, who died as an infant, and  Lotta Strevell and her husband Frank Betterton.

Amidon Moore Strevell

Amidon had finished the 8th Reader when he went to work at his father's store in Ravena. His sisters, Jessie and Lotta, went to a New York girls boarding school. In those days, a Reader was similar to a grade. A Reader was book and if you had finished the book, you went on to the next number. Amidon was a self-learner and was  a wiz at math. He loved to read. His favorites were the British authors such as Shakespeare. He read poetry beautifully. Amidon had an Uncle out West who once came to visit him and he brought Amidon Dickens' "Christmas Carol". Amidon didn't like it and was actually upset because books were so hard to come by and it was unfortunate he was given one he didn't care for.

Amidon went to England before he was married. He traveled through Scotland and traced out the path that Sir Walter Lake writes about in "Lady of the Lake". He wrote it out in the back of the book and handed it down to his granddaughter, Jean Brocklebank-Jennings.

Amidon married Anna Palmer on May 1, 1897. An interesting side note about Anna is that both of her parents were Palmers before they married.

At some point after Amidon and Anna married, they went back to England. Anna had stomach problems and was told by doctors to go overseas as the sea-sickness would cure her ailments. It seemed to work.

Amidon continued in the heating and plumbing business, but not in the original store. He moved to New Jersey in 1911 when he was 37 years old and had his business there. Amidon lived to be 80 years old, passing away in 1953.

Amidon & Anna had three children:

Hazel (b. 1898)

Roger Palmer (b. Jul 30, 1900)

Lotta Belle (b. 1906)

Elmina, James & Rentie Strevel

Elmina, James and Rentie died within 8 days of each other from Spotted Fever. They are buried in an old grave yard in the woods where the church burned on the road from East Berne to West Berne.

In this era, it was very common for graves to have both a headstone and footstone. Also, people sometimes have a hard time finding the sites they are looking for because the first name was at the top of the headston and it is often mistaken for the last name.  The documentation for this cemetary did not include James because it was mistaken for his last name.

Here is a picture of the three children's graves, from left - Rentie, James Elmina. Rentie's grave is laying flat and Elmina's footstone is up by the headstone.

German Roots

The Strübel's came from the State of Wuerrtemburg, Germany. Many people  assumed they came from Palitinate, Germany, because at the time of their arrival into the US, most of the German immigrants were from Palitinate.

The Strübel's originally lived in Beiningen, which is southwest of Ulm, Germany - about 100 miles west of Munich.  Beiningen was too small to have its own church, so they attended church in Pappelau, a nearby town. In 1611, they moved to Seissen, which is about 20 miles away. Although this may not seem like it is very far, the area is somewhat mountainous and Seissen and Beiningen are on opposite sides of a mountain so crossing would take quite a bit of time.  Beiningen, Pappelau, and Seissen were noted as being Protestant towns in the 1600's so it is not surprising that they moved from one Protestant town to another.

The church in Pappelau is beautiful and the pastor there showed me the original book and page that lists Michael Strübel's birth record. Here are some pictures of the church and the book.

Today, Seissen is a small but beautiful village. It has actually become annexed by the city of Blaubeuren and is no longer its own city.  Here are some pictures of Seissen today:

There is still a Strübel family living in Seissen and they actually live in a house that has been in the Strübel family for about 200 years. Otto Strübel lives in the house with his wife, Minne, 3 daughters and a son, Michael. I had a chance to visit with Michael, who is a carpenter and speaks English, as well as speak with Otto on the phone.

Strübel

Otto co-wrote a book entitled "900 Years in Seissen". In the book, Ulrich and Johan are discussed as having left Seissen in 1752 for Philadelphia, in the New World. It appears they never made it to Philadelphia, but instead went to New York, however, it is interesting that this information was listed in the church records.

Giles & Olive Strevell

Giles lived in Berne, New York along with his father, Spencer and grandfather Isaac and the rest of the family. The family stayed very close, as most families did in this time. Giles was born on his grandfather Isaac's farm in E. Berne.

This is a present day picture of where Giles lived in 1866. It is 969 Colehill Rd, just south of the Fox Creek, near Route 443.

Giles married Olive B. Strevell (Strevell was her maiden name as well) on Dec 25, 1878. Olive was born in Berne to Amidon and Sarah Strevell. Since both of their parents were Strevells, they called Olive's father Big Grandpa, and Giles' father Little Grandpa.

Giles lived next door to his father Spencer. Giles eventually left the farm, learned the carpenter trade, and moved to 302 Clinton Ave, in Albany, where Harry was born in 1884.

From Albany, Giles moved to Voorhesville, NY, where he went into the carpenter business with his brother in law, Abe Martin, of Altamont. One of Spencer's sisters, Hannah, had married Abe.

Giles & Olive in 1904

Giles & Olive had 5 children:

Bertha (b. Mar 11, 1882) and died young

Harry Arthur (b. Aug 25, 1884)

Frank (b. Jul 3, 1886)

Ada B (b Feb 8, 1888)

Guy (b. Apr 22, 1890)

Because Olive was a half sister to Amidon Moore, she was 18 years older than he was. Hence, her son Harry was only 11 years younger than his "Uncle Ami". Harry and Ami must have spent lots of time together as there are pictures today showing them climbing together as well as lots of pictures of Amidon's children.

Johannes Strevel

Margie Miller, the historian in Ancramdale, which is where Johannas and Uldrick had adjoining farms, took a group from one of the Strevel, Strevell, and Strever family reunion around to different cemeteries to look at grave sites of the early Strevels and Strevers. It is unknown where Uldrick`s gravestone is, but Johannas Strevel and his wife Maria`s are still in place. The gravestones were very large and it was easy to see the engraving on them

Here are the direction to Johannas` and Maria`s gravestones:
Start at the Ancramdale General Store.
take Skyline past Cottontail - go approx .2 miles and go
Left at the "Y" (go approx .4 miles) and go
Left at the "Y" and go approx .6 miles
At the "T" go left on Fernbank Rd
Pass Cedar Lane
go 1.3 miles and turn right on Hall Hill Rd.
go 2.4 miles and turn left at the "Y"
go .3 miles to "T" go right & then take immediate left into
Barn (Silvernails) - there is the Dings Cemetary.

To see their grave stones one would need to go over the fence on the right into what looks like a forest. It is actually not that big in there and there are a number of graves (most flat on the ground) however, Johannas` and Maria`s are still upright and in good shape. They are fairly large and easy to find.

Samuel  was born Aug 17,1903 in Pittsfield, MA.

The story is told that after his mother died and his father remarried, the new wife was abusive to Samuel and he ended up running away from home, never to return. This line of the Strevell family had been very difficult to trace up until the last several years.

Edward Harvey Patrick (b. Jul 22, 1929)

    Edward died April 16, 1996

It is not known whether Samuel divorced Violet and when but we know he had children with another woman, who eventually became his wife. He married Katherine Belle Barwick in 1955. They had 8 children:

Mary Hoagland

James Clay

Gary Lee (b. Mar 22,1946)

Spencer Strevel

Spencer lived in Berne, New York along with his father, Isaac and the rest of the family. The family stayed very close, as most families did in this time. When Spencer married, he worked his father's farm and his son Giles was born on that farm. Later he settled on a farm between Becker's Corner and South Bethlehem.

This is where Spencer lived in 1866. It is on Colehill Rd, just north of the Fox Creek, near Route 443

It was during Spencer's lifetime that the name was changed from Strevel to Strevell. In 1854, it is listed as Strevel but by 1866, it had changed to Strevell.

In 1871, Spencer lost 3 of his children within 8 days due to Spotted Fever. These three children, Elmina, James, and Rentie are buried in the Pine Grove Cemetary, which was associated with the Zion Lutheran Church.

Strevell & DeFriest Hardware

Strevell and DeFriest Hardware was located on Main Street in the early part of the century.
It later became Davis Drug and is now the site of Fori's Store.

From Ravena News:

It was in the year 1889 that the hardware business now conducted by Strevell & DeFriest was started in this place. A.M. Strevell, father of the present senior member of the firm, launched the enterprise, and year by year it has grown until at present a most lucrative business is being carried on.
For a number of years, Seth H. DeFriest had been connected with the business and on July 1, 1903, the firm name was changed from A.M. Strevell  to Strevell & DeFriest.
In the growth of our village this concern has taken a most conspicuous part. All over the village the work of the plumber done in the new houses bears evidence of what has been accomplished by our hardware firm in the building of the place. And their activities have not been confined to this village alone, but trade has come to them from outside in a large measure, while they have been in demand for plumbing work in the section round about Ravena. The firm caters carefully to the wants of its patrons by carrying a good selection of goods and as each season changes the purchaser finds what he needs.
The members of the firm are heartily interested in and in accord with all that makes for the advancement of our village and lend a ready hand to all good laudable moves. The junior member, Seth H. DeFriest, is town clerk of the town of Coeymans.

Present day shot of what was Strevell & DeFriest
